Hymenoplasty is the process of reconstructing a broken hymen. The main aim of this surgery is to recreate the hymen without leaving any visible scar on or over it. It is also known as hymen restoration for obvious reasons.
The hymen is a skin membrane that is present in the lower part of a vagina. Generally, the hymen is torn after the first sexual intercourse of women. But under certain circumstances, the hymen can also break due to physical accidents or sudden movements.
Hymenoplasty is a very simple surgery where the hymen is repaired by stitching the torn areas of the hymen with dissolvable stitches. This surgery is generally done by giving the patient local anaesthesia. It is also very important as in many religions' the hymen is treated as a sign of virginity. One thing to note is that hymen can also break or tear through non-sexual activities such as physical exercises. This surgery is also very common for women who are victims of sexual assault.
Procedure:
1. The patient must not be medicated with any non-inflammatory or anything that has aspirin in it.
2. Local anesthesia is provided before the start of the surgery. Local anaesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia can also be applied.
3. The torn edges of the hymen undergo excision.
4. The scars are covered before stitching them together.
5. There is no dressing after the surgery. Only cleaning is done that too with sterile water, alcohol and cotton.
Benefits:
1. The scars are hidden in the hymen folds and are not visible
2. The result of the surgery is immediate, and the hymen gets completely closed
3. You can be fit to return to your home after 30 minutes of the surgery
4. It improves mental health for PTSD patients.
